Berry Law Welcomes Criminal Defense Attorney Megan Kielty
Lincoln, Nebraska – The prestigious, multi-award-winning Berry Law firm has added a powerhouse young superstar lawyer to their ranks with the recent hiring of Megan Kielty.
A 2016 graduate of the Nebraska College of Law, Kielty has already distinguished herself in her brief career through a variety of trial wins and achievements. In her very first major victory, Kielty successfully defended a client against charges of DUI in what turned out to be the first jury trial held in Otoe County court in over a decade. Kielty quickly went on to continue establishing herself, trying over 15 jury trials and securing numerous acquittals. Most recently, she won a Grand Island sexual assault case in which her client was falsely accused of first-degree sexual assault, and successfully appealed a juvenile court’s termination of parental rights. Kielty’s brief in the latter case is quoted in the Nebraska Court of Appeal’s decision In re: Interest of Zoey W.
Says Kielty, “I was inspired to become an attorney after witnessing the inequalities and injustices that exist in the criminal justice system. I truly believe that the protection of everyone’s constitutional rights, no matter who they are or what they may have done, is fundamental to a healthy society.”
Even before becoming an attorney, Kielty had already distinguished herself with a string of academic awards, including the 2014 CALI Excellence for the Future Award in Trial Advocacy, Gross & Welch Best Brief Award, and McGrath North Excellence in Legal Writing Award, as well as the 2015 CALI Excellence for the Future Award in Advanced Trial Advocacy. She served as the problem-writing editor for the Nebraska Moot Court Board and graduated with high distinction.
Says Berry Law’s Sarah Newell, “I am very excited to have Megan join our team. She has extensive experience at both the trial and appellate level. Her skill, focus, and determination are real assets, especially with the postconviction and appellate work she will be emphasizing.”
Kielty brings with her to Berry Law a unique passion for the law. “Most attorneys find appellate work tedious and boring,” she says. “I truly enjoy all aspects of appellate/postconviction work, like reviewing large files, researching novel legal issues, drafting complex briefs, and presenting oral arguments… I have argued in front of the Nebraska Supreme Court three times and the Court of Appeals one time.”
Asked what she wants her reputation to be, Kielty says, “I want my clients to remember I am fearless, competent, and kind.”
Berry Law was recently named for the seventh consecutive year to the Inc. 5000 list of the fastest-growing small businesses in America and named to the Military Times’ ‘Best for Vets’ list of the best employers of veterans in the United States.
